The bottomline of life…

People say that you start valuing things more as soon as they leave your possession.. The grass becomes greener when its not on your side. Well, we all have experienced it. I have experienced it. I have always fancied others’ racquets more than mine, others’ bikes more than mine, other’s lives more than mine!

 It even applies to our own things as well.. A pair of sunglasses i always had, started seeming more precious to me when I gave it to a friend!! 

The truth that holds is.. ladies and gentlemen.. we start valuing things more when it is taken or is about to be taken away from us.

What if the thing being taken away is…. our life!!!

Presenting below is the last lecture delivered by a man.. he died few days after this lecture was shot.. 

As you would have observed, the true value of your childhood dreams became clearer when the ability to achieve them was being taken away from you…. nostalgia is not always good.. it must have made him immensely sad that whatever chances he had to achieve his dreams do not rest with him.. Still, he had spent 40-50 yrs of his life doing something which he will cherish.. We salute a man who had the guts to stand up and speak.. whatever he realized was important in his life!

The Hurt Locker

I have watched numerous films since my blog is up and running but was never compelled to write a review for one – especially when i have numerous exams lined up next week but “The Hurt Locker” has deserved it!

The movie barges into the league of “Platoon”, “Black Hawk Down”and “Saving Private Ryan” and stands tall among them.. real tall.. But what makes it different is the documentary touch to it.. You would observe that for the first time the unsteady shots add value to the effect.  During filming, three, four or more hand-held super 16mm cameras were used to film scenes in documentary style. Nearly two hundred hours of footage was shot at an eye-popping 100:1 shooting ratio.

Starkly, u feel the pinch of the movie throughout – the suspense and the natural locations add to the feel immensely. The production couldn’t gain access to a U.S. military base in Kuwait, so the whole production was moved to Amman, Jordan. The crew was always at risk but Jordan military had provided them with cover. Cinematographer Barry Ackroyd has done an immensely good job. – makes u feel the heat of Iraq, the loneliness of the desert and the fear of the dark.. Sound Designs are superb .. occasional hums of ‘Allah – Akbar’ from faraway mosques simply lift you from ur rooms and u feel the grandeur of Middle East..

Kudos to James Cameron as well.. as it was he who convince his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow to direct this film. She originally had plans on doing another project and wasn’t sure about doing this film. Cameron read it and told her to do this film, she went off doing and as a result, this film ending up being one of most successful independent films of 2009 and the most successful in her career.

The  scene between Jeremy Renner and his son is so poignant that it might put a lump in your throat. Protagonist has done a beautiful job and he deserves applauses for wearing a real bomb suit in the sweltering desert heat without a stunt double.

Let me wish the team of “The Hurt Locker” all the best for Oscars and plz take a treat from me if it wins most of its 9 oscar nominations this year. Do watch this movie for it will always keep u on tenterhooks, for its natural appeal, for the risk the crew took , the underlying message and pure cinematic excellence.
